After a tooth has been removed, the healed jaw bone may be too thin to place a dental implant.
In some cases, the bone can be expanded to fit an implant, but if this isn’t possible or if the facial aesthetics would be compromised, bone grafting is a solution. This involves taking bone from another part of the mouth, such as the chin or back of the jaw, and fusing it onto the site where the dental implant is to be placed. The procedure usually takes 2-4 months to heal properly before the implant can then be placed.
